Memories Do Not Open

“Memories do not open” is my year-long conceptual documentary film project. As a child living by the Xiangjiang River, the river is a unique and private place for me personally. I grew up quiet and introverted, and my only entertainment as a child was sitting by the river, watching the old men fishing and the cargo ships carrying coal over and over again. When I began to use photography as a medium of expression, I continued to document the waters of the Xiangjiang River in the city where I once lived. When confronted with it, what emerges is not only an emotional addition to life, but also a natural attachment to memory, the latter being a constant reminder of the individual’s existence.

The project’s overall structure also changes according to the geographical location and personal reflections. I started in northern Hunan and travelled about a hundred kilometres downstream, where I lived and studied. I illustrate the uniqueness of the Xiangjiang River and its ever-deriving historical breadth based on the change in location and history. In this way, I focus on the identity and life situation of the new generation of Xiangjiang residents. By thinking about the non-linearity of the images, I reconstruct the emotional commonality of the Xiangjiang residents in the folds of history. The reconstruction of memory in the face of the new urban planning of the city nowadays is a way to answer the individual’s residual memories and questions in the swirl of the Xiangjiang River.
